About Lucy
Ying “Lucy” Zhou, Ph.D., is the founder and president of the Hinsdale Multicultural Arts & Education Association (HMAE). Her work centers on multicultural education, community engagement, and building programs that connect people across cultures and generations.
Since 2023, Lucy has initiated and developed recurring Mid-Autumn Festival and Lunar New Year celebrations in the Hinsdale community, beginning at Hinsdale Public Library and later expanding to Hinsdale Central High School and Hinsdale Covenant Church. She also initiated an Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) celebration in 2026. These programs are designed not as one-time events, but as lasting community traditions. In 2025, the Village of Hinsdale proclaimed October “Mid-Autumn Moon Festival Month,” and in 2026 the Mid-Autumn Festival became part of Hinsdale’s America 250 programming.
In the United States, Lucy has spent more than a decade teaching and tutoring children and teenagers. Drawing on her background in curriculum design, she developed a structured Chinese-language learning system for students growing up in the United States, including heritage Chinese learners, children from multiracial families, and students from families with no Asian background. The system uses pinyin as a foundation for independent learning, clear goals and methods for review and new learning, attention to students’ emotional readiness, and structured language and music activities that support individualized instruction.
Her broader educational work includes a 12-part public lecture series on family education and adolescent well-being, long-running learning communities for children and teenagers, presentations for high school East Asian history classes on cultural differences between China and the United States, and an Eastern Culture Series for community audiences. Across these programs, she consistently emphasizes public speaking, independent thinking, reading, and writing.
Lucy served as an elected trustee and Board Secretary of the Hinsdale Public Library from 2023 to 2025. Before moving to the United States, she spent ten years in China as a professor and academic program director in bridge engineering, overseeing curriculum planning and instructional coordination from undergraduate through master’s study. She also wrote the “Bridge Culture” column for China Transport News, a newspaper affiliated with China’s Ministry of Transport. Her articles combined engineering expertise, extensive research, cultural history, and engaging storytelling, making complex subjects accessible to general readers while still offering technical insight to professionals.
